AT A GLANCE
The Dead on Arrival Learning Community at UCCS is tailored to students interested in exploring the field of criminal justice. It intends to foster a supportive environment for students to navigate the college experience together, build a support network, and make lasting friendships.
During class sessions:
- enjoy fields trips, events, and activities tailored to criminal justice. From a courthouse and coroner's office visit to guest speakers who work in the field of Criminal Justice, you will be exposed to a variety of experiences to explore your interests.
Outside of class:
- take advantage of opportunities to connect and make friends with peers interested in criminal justice or related fields.
- participate in meetups to enhance your overall college experience, including weekend trips, socials, and more!
Learning Community Coach:
Each of our learning communities has a Learning Community Coach (LCC) - a student who shares a similar interest (in this case, an interest in Criminal Justice), who has successfully navigated their first year at UCCS. LCC's attend the Gateway Program Seminar (GPS) class every week and meet with students individually and in groups outside of class. LCC's help connect students with instructors, resources, and opportunities to get the most out of their college experience.
To join the Dead on Arrival Learning Community, email learncom@uccs.edu for a permission code to enroll in both GPS 1010.037 and CRJU 1001.001. The Dead on Arrival Learning Community is for criminal justice majors or criminal justice intent students only.
GPS 1010.037 - Dead On Arrival (DOA)
Mondays 1:40 PM to 4:20 PM (Aug. 22, 2024 - Nov. 10, 2024)
*Mandatory Gateway Days on August 22nd and 23rd from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM both days.
Course Description: Do you know exactly what happens after a violent crime has been committed? Do you wonder how accurate popular television shows are in illustrating criminal investigations? In this course, you will learn about the criminal investigation process, modern techniques in crime scene investigation, and will explore high profile cases in the criminal justice system.
CRJU 1001.001 - Intro to Criminal Justice
Wednesdays 1:40 PM to 4:20 PM (Aug. 26, 2024 - Dec. 21, 2024)
Course Description: Designed to provide an overview of the criminal justice process and the criminal justice system in general. Concepts of crime, deviance, and justice are discussed, and general theories of crime causality are examined. Special emphasis is placed on the components of the criminal justice system: the police, the prosecutorial and defense functions, the judiciary, and the field of corrections. Approved for Compass Curriculum requirement: Explore-Society, Health and Behavior.

Hello! My name is Ryann Arnold. I am about to enter my third year as a dual Criminal Justice/Psychology major. I want to be a Forensic Psychologist. I will be going into my second year of mentoring students. Outside the classroom, I enjoy being outdoors, hiking, or paddle boarding. I also love animals, and I have two dogs, Maggie and Ruby. Dead on Arrival (DOA) is a fun and engaging class where you learn about a crime scene's forensic and legal side and the criminal justice system. The class also takes fun trips to see different jobs in the criminal justice system.
